This refers to the easy flow of speech. This could be broken if you experience a stutter which is the involuntary break in the flow of speech. It can manifest as repetitions of the first sound in a word, hard blocks or prolongations of the first sound. This is a variable condition as it is different for different people and across various situations. We provide you with an individualized programme to help you manage your stutter. In young children we will work closely with the parents to provide support for the child. Please have a look at the article on the normal period of dysfluency on our blog.

If you are concerned that your child may have a language delay it is important to get this seen to as soon as possible. When we speak about language we refer to both the understanding of language and expressive language. Many people make excuses such as "He is a boy and boys are late talker" or "My grandfather only spoke when he was four years old". The reality is that the sooner a language delay is detected, the better! Research has shown that this could have a serious impact on your child's ability to learn later in life.

We offer therapeutic intervention to those who have damage to their vocal cords, resulting in altered voice quality. This is often due to vocal misuse and abuse and often can be remedied by making some lifestyle changes. People affected by this often include teachers and professional singers.

This refers to the brains interpretation of the information it receives from the ear. Auditory processing and hearing are two different things. Just like Listening and Hearing are two different things. A child who has difficulty processing the sounds in their environment may have difficulty following directions, difficulty paying attention to speech in a noisy environment, may be unable to discriminate between different sounds and may present with difficulty in reading and spelling. The diagnosis and treatment of Auditory Processing Disorder is a precise art that requires team work from various professionals. It is important that this is identified and treated correctly.

This refers to the way we say our speech sounds and is separate to language. Children go through a normal process of learning to say their speech sounds. We call these phonological processes. When a child has an articulation error in their speech it may be due to one or more of these processes being delayed or may have other root causes (for example as a result of a cleft palate). It is important to have your child assessed to determine whether the errors that they make are age appropriate and if not, to have them remediated as soon as possible.
